Woman's lot: The feminine knowing is the English title of the exhibition that opened on November 13th at the Reykjanes Art Museum. It exhibits works by: Guðrún Tryggvadóttir, Dodda Maggý, Guðný Kristmanns, Hlaðgerður Íris, Hulda Vilhjálmsdóttir, Jóhanna Kristín Yngvadóttir, Kristín Gunnlaugsdóttir, Louise Harris, Magdalena Margrét Kjartansdóttir, Róska, Valgerður Guðlaugsdóttir and Þórdís Aðalsteinsdóttir. Curator is the art historioan Aðalsteinn Ingólfsson.
“The theme of the exhibition, entitled „Women´s Lot“, centers on a passage written by American essayist Joan Didion, where she muses on „what is it like to be a woman, the irreconcilable difference of it – that sense of living oneʽs deepest life underwater, that dark involvement with blood and birth and death“. The twelve women artists featured in the exhibition frankly challenge taboos and misconceptions about female sexuality. They deal with the emergence of sexuality and blossoming of sexual maturity, celebrate women‘s sexual organs and attributes, even touch on controversial topics such as child sexuality, sexual surrender and desire. In their openness to the vagaries and obsessions of the „instinctual life“ these women artists exhibit emotional maturity far beyond that of their male colleagues.“ (Aðalsteinn Ingólfsson).
